Since 1986 when the festival was first held, the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival has become one of the most striking international cultural events in the world. However, this music festival is not held in the music halls or theaters that people are familiar with, but it is held in the beautiful castles, manors, barns, stalls, the most magnificent church in Schleswig-Holstein, or even in shipyards, factory halls, and other unusual places.

Since 2017 when Elbphilharmonie Laeiszhalle Hamburg was built, the cooperation between Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival has been upgraded to the official level, so as to attract more fans from Northern Germany to join the festival.

From 1996 to 2013, the art concept of the SHMF was to choose a nation of unique features and highlight its music and culture. This concept has made the festival a world event and become internationalized: from Finland to Japan, and from the U.S. to Russia. After the new director Dr. Christian Kuhnt joined the festival in 2014, the festival has created a new path by highlighting the specific composers of each year. This year, many performers focused their attention on the works of Joseph Haydn. The Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival is aimed at building the “bridge” between music and people, to connect artists and music, and also helps the audience see these outstanding musicians. At the 2016 Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, the outstanding pianist Mr. András Schiff held many concerts in different places of Schleswig-Holstein.
