Hangzhou West Lake International Expo

The West Lake International Expo, held from June 6 to October 20 in 1929, founded a beginning of the exhibition industry in China. Later, due to the historical implications, it once suspended for 70 years.

The West Lake International Expo, held from June 6 to October 20 in 1929, founded a beginning of the exhibition industry in China. Later, due to the historical implications, it once suspended for 70 years.

In June, 1999, Hangzhou Government convened a special session to discuss the preliminary idea of the scheme of the “West Lake International Expo,” drafted firstly by Hangzhou Planning Commission, and clarified the proposal of the Expo. Thereafter, the stage of intense preparation of the West Lake International Expo started. On October 20, 2000, the second West Lake International Expo opened; and its name was changed into “Hangzhou, China— the West Lake International Expo of 2000” (briefly as China Hangzhou West Lake International Expo or the West Lake International Expo).

Considering that Hangzhou has had the experience to hold the West Lake International Expo successfully, on August 10, 2002, the Council of World Leisure Organization voted to agree that Hangzhou would become the city to hold World Leisure Expo of 2006. And on April 22, 2006, the World Leisure Expo of 2006 and the eighth West Lake International Expo were held together. Additionally, the opening ceremony and closing ceremony of the “two sessions” were conducted at the same time.
