Unveiled in 1935, the Freedom Monument was built for soldiers that passed away in Latvia’s War of Independence (1918-1920) and is an important symbol of Latvia’s freedom, independence, and sovereignty. The monument carried the inscription “TEVZEMEI UN BRIVIBAI”, which means “For Fatherland and Freedom”. Seeing the Changing of the Guard at Freedom Monument is an obligatory stop for tourists in Riga.
