The Catacombs of Lima is one of the oldest and most famous cemeteries that are located in Lima, the capital of Peru. It consists of a network of underground tunnels and rooms, located in the Basilica and Convent of San Francisco de Lima.

With the arrival of the Spaniards in South America in the middle of the 15th century, the settlers began to settle in the Viceroyalty of Peru. As they were new and unexplored lands there were not enough resources to make decent funerals, adding to that once someone died at that time there was no specific place where their bodies rested and so as not to spread diseases they were buried in any place . So that the Black Death does not spread through the city that by that time was causing havoc throughout Europe, they decided to put an immediate solution to this problem. Thus, they began with the construction of tunnels and underground passages throughout the city, in order to avoid the contamination and diseases that the bodies would bring once in decomposition. In every church that there was, that at that time was in every corner of the city, inside they had underground with which people could leave their dead relatives. While more diseases were present in Europe, months later they also manifested themselves in the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru.
