Malacca Introduction

Malacca is the capital of Malacca State which is located in the north bank of Malacca Strait and it is separated from Indonesia’s Sumatra Island by sea. Malacca is Malaysia’s oldest city which was founded in 1403; it used to be the capital of the Malacca Kingdom.

Malacca, now located in the narrowest place of the Malacca Strait. It is of great strategy significance. It created a good foundation for Malacca to become a trading hub. In the middle of 15th century, after Zheng He’s voyage, the connection between China and Malacca got strengthened. In 1509, the Portuguese arrived in Malacca facilitate trading. In 1511, Portugal occupied Malacca and turned this region into a strategic fortress to contain other European powers to covet wealth in Asia. In 1641, the Dutch navy blocked the Malacca coast and occupied this city after six months. In 1795, the Netherlands were defeated by France; the British people could not wait to take over Malacca. Malacca, Singapore, and Penang became the Straits Settlements together. After dissolution of the colonies Malacca became a member of the Malayan Federal, which will eventually become the ruling government at a later time. Malacca is famous for its food, Chinese, and Wu dishes blend of overseas Chinese (peranakan) cuisine, which is very spicy. Even today, many ancient traditional ceremony since the Portuguese occupational period is still going on, such as “Intrudu (marked Catholic lent fast starting of water), branyu (traditional dance), and Santa Cruz (the annual festival to celebrate on the streets). Zheng He led the team and some settled there and married with local Wu clan. Their descendants are known as “peranakan” locally and even today, they still keep Chinese traditional customs and etiquette of life. Three Baoshan is the oldest garden in Malaysia which covers an area of 43 hectare. It is also the burial site of about 12,500 Chinese ancestors.
