In 1860, the French Napoleon III signed a contract with the king of Sardinia, thus making Nice a French territory up until today. A lot of traditional culture and art has been preserved in Nice especially folk music and folk dance. The most famous dance is francs dole.

Climate
Nice is one of the warmest cities in mainland France. It has a pleasant climate all the year round, warm in winter and cool in summer, belonging to typical Mediterranean climate. It rarely freezes in the winter time, almost no snow, and sometimes the temperature can reach to 20°C. On March, 2nd, 2007, the peak temperature reached 26°C. Nice’s three sides are surrounded by mountains and one side faces the sea through a 7.5 mile coastline. The mountains provide Nice with a barrier against the cold north wind. The coastal land also makes Nice a sunny place all year round. Usually May and June as well as September and October are the best seasons.
